The big concern is noise from all the electrical and electronic stuff in the house.By the way, my wife and I got my daughter a Nintendo Switch, some kind of “old school” (?) video game console. It is bonded to the house ground rod right outside where it enters the house. The water line that runs to the street is also copper. The copper water pipe that runs above my bench is only a few feet from the water meter. There are also several pairs of high impedance headphones squirreled away. Until then, I can cobble together something temporary to use.The fun has just begun - again! I am sure that have a few matching transformers in my bone yard of odd parts. That will give me time to plan something good. The storm that brought my last longwire down also caused the loss of the tree that was the support for one end of it. A permanent longwire antenna may have to wait until spring. I am anxious to do some research on the radio as you suggest Pio1980. This one is very much the same, considering the “antenna” that it was connected to today. Still, I was excited to hear that little radio come to life.Įven when I was a kid living on Long Island, the CR-1 would only receive one or two stations with very little, if any, sensitivity or selectivity. What the heck, a 15 foot vertical is better than a 16” vertical to experiment with, right? I was able to listen to one of our three local AM broadcast stations quite clearly. I found an abandoned piece of copper pipe that runs from the basement to the attic. I only have a few VHF and UHF antennas in the attic so I went looking for something else to try. I did clean the four binding posts and the switch in the CR-1 with Deoxit. Well, it was in the twenties and very windy outside today so after conceeding that I am not in my teens anymore, I decided to stay inside instead of stringing up a longwire antenna outside. The efficiency of the headphones, ideally used with a low-loss high ratio 200-500 k Ohm matching transformer is a major factor for best results, tho this arrangement produces good results with stronger local AM stations with a modest long wire antenna and ground connection on a decent 2000 Ohm headset.The inexpensive Bogen T725 line transformer can be used as a basic matching transformer to improve performance, see the 'net for info. A classic Marconi wireless era circuit with modern components.I've fooled with a few homebuilts based on this circuit with more efficient low-loss parts, and the DX performance with reasonable selectivity can be astonishing. I always said that I put up more antennas in snow storms than I did in warm weather. My last one came down in a storm a couple of years ago.
I am really excited about it and can’t wait to string up a longwire antenna for it and my other shortwave radios. I have been patiently looking for another one at yard sales and antique stores for more than ten years. Unfortunately, I lost track of it over the years. That is what started my interest in electronics and led to a lifetime hobby and a career involving electronics in one way or another. I was completely taken by surprise when I opened the box and saw what was inside.What makes this so special for me is that the CR-1 is the first radio that I built with my dad back in roughly 1960 (please don’t do the math!). She found a near mint looking model and wrapped it in a small space heater box.
